Why do we need a resume? 

A well-crafted resume serves as your introduction to employers and recruiters, showcasing your qualifications and unique qualities. In a competitive job market, it’s crucial to have a resume that sets you apart from other applicants. 

The ultimate goal of a carefully tailored and polished resume is to secure an interview opportunity. 

Which section of the resume is most important?

The “Experience” section is often emphasized on resumes, but many employers actually value the “Skills” section more. Skills are crucial as they indicate growth potential and can compensate for the lack of experience. 

Where to place the Skills section?

Surprisingly, the placement of the “Skills” section on your resume is also important. Nancy Anderson (Entrepreneur, Author) recommends placing a mix of six to eight soft and job-related skills towards the top of your resume. 

Things to keep in mind while crafting your resume 

  • Use a professional email address.
  • Include a professional summary.
  • Use action verbs. For example, “Managed,” “Implemented,” or “Coordinated.”
  • Use a professional format. Consider using bullet points, headings, and consistent formatting to enhance readability.
  • Keep it concise. The average length of a resume is 369 words. Make sure you don’t exceed the 400 mark. 
  • Highlight only the most relevant information. Hiring managers spend only 6-7 seconds on average reviewing a resume.
  • Optimize for ATS by adding relevant keywords. 75% of companies and 98% of Fortune 500 companies use Applicant Tracking Software (ATS) to screen resumes. Incorporate industry-specific keywords in your resume to match the job description and improve its chances of passing the ATS screening. 
  • Customize your resume. 90% of candidates apply with standard resumes, but customizing your resume to match the job requirements can improve your chances of success.
  • Highlight healthcare experience. If you’re applying for an EKG Tech job, emphasize your experience in healthcare or relevant externships to showcase your background in the field.
  • Pay attention to style and tone. Ensure a professional and confident tone in your resume. Avoid writing in the third person. Employers reject 43% of resumes for the same. 
  • Proofread for errors.

What Should You Include In Your Resume?

Resume Objective/Summary: 

Start with a concise statement that highlights your career goals, relevant skills, and experience as an EKG Technician. 

For example: 

“Motivated EKG Technician graduate with a solid understanding of cardiovascular health and diagnostic procedures. Eager to apply theoretical knowledge and practical training to contribute to a healthcare team’s success. Committed to delivering accurate test results and providing compassionate patient care.”  

Key Skills: 

Include a dedicated section showcasing your technical skills, such as: 

  • EKG interpretation 
  • Patient monitoring 
  • Equipment handling 
  • and any other relevant abilities 

Don’t forget to add soft skills, such as: 

  • Communication Skills 
  • Professionalism 
  • Attention to detail 
  • Problem awareness 
  • and other relevant skills

Work Experience: 

Detail your professional experience, including job titles, names of employers, dates of employment, and a brief description of your responsibilities and accomplishments as an EKG Technician. 

If you are a fresher, include your internships and externships, and focus on your skills and education section. 

Add the following details:

  • Job title
  • Name of the company worked at
  • Duration of work period (Start to End Date)
  • A bulleted list of all tasks and your accomplishments 

Education and Certifications: 

Mention your educational background, including your degree or diploma in EKG Technology or any related field.

Choose neutral colors and simple designs that appear professional. Additionally, use a clear and formal font that is easy to read. 

Remember, resumes are ideally limited to one page, so prioritize including all relevant information within that space. If your skills, experience, and education don’t fit on a page, it is no crime to send a 2-page resume.

Cover letters are not mandatory, but some employers often appreciate candidates who provide additional information about themselves. A well-crafted and job-customized cover letter can give you an edge in the application process.
