Installing and fixing equipment for air conditioning and ventilation

The most crucial role of an HVAC technician is to install and fix equipment as and when required.

When installing any system, an HVAC Technician must take care of different plugs, wiring, etc., since even a little mistake can lead to a huge issue.

An HVAC Technician must be able to interpret the blueprint provided to him and install the system as per that map only.

Determining the dangers of equipment maintenance

They are also expected to identify and convey equipment maintenance dangers to their customers. They must educate their customers about safety procedures and ways to overcome those dangerous situations.

Diagnosing HVAC systems’ electrical and mechanical issues-

Whenever an issue arises, an HVAC Technician must be able to troubleshoot and diagnose them as quickly as possible. An HVAC Technician must be able to deal with critical situations and fix the issues effectively.

Cleaning, changing, and fixing frameworks

Not just installations, but an HVAC Technician is also responsible for cleaning, changing, or fixing the frameworks as and when required.

As the name suggests, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning are required to clean or fix different equipment as per the weather change or customer demands.

Performing emergency repairs instantly and effectively

An HVAC Technician needs to keep all the emergency repair tools on themselves as there can be a requirement at any time.

If there’s an emergency where there’s a leakage, you would have to rush to the location and perform the necessary repair.

Giving technical direction and training on the job

HVAC techs should be able to give technical direction and training during the job. As the number of workers expands and you gain more responsibilities, you will be responsible for training your workers and guiding them to the right course of action.

Keeping daily records of all maintenance tasks in logs

As an HVAC Technician, you may have to multitask. It’s expected that you keep yourself updated with the maintenance tasks and know how to lead the boat. 

You should know your duties and how to prioritize your day-to-day tasks responsibly while working as an HVAC Technician.

Most of the time, HVAC Technicians have to communicate with customers, know their requirements, and deliver them accordingly. If you’re an HVAC Technician, you may be expected to answer calls as well.

They can often be seen involved in answering queries of their customers on a phone call or visiting them personally. In this case, they are also expected to communicate effectively so that the problems can be solved adequately.

  • High school diploma, GED or suitable equivalent.

The minimum requirement to become an HVAC Technician is that you need to complete your high school diploma. An HVAC Technician must have a high school diploma from a renowned institution.

  • 1+ year experience as an HVAC technician and willingness to continue education in the HVAC field.

The next requirement for you is to have at least 1+ year of experience in the same role. You can start your HVAC Tech journey while working under someone in a commercial organization or for household-related work.

  • Valid driver’s license.

HVAC technicians often need to travel for work purposes, either for a commercial purpose or to repair something at the customer’s place. As an HVAC technician, to save time, having your own vehicle comes in handy.

As an HVAC Technician, you must be able to travel anywhere for work purposes and have a valid driver’s license.

  • Understanding of advanced principles of air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating.

As the name suggests, Heating, Ventilation, Air, Conditioning (HVAC), one must also know the advanced principles of air conditioning and heating.

You’ll often be called to repair systems at a customer’s location or on commercial premises, and in such situations, you must know all the technicalities related to systems, such as refrigerators.

  • Working knowledge of boiler systems

Boiler systems also come in the list of appliances or systems that you, as an HVAC Technician, will have to work on. You must know about these boiler systems and how to fix or replace them when customers demand them.

  • Proficient in balancing air and water treatment systems in line with HVAC protocols.

As an HVAC Technician, you’ll often be asked to balance certain air and water treatment systems.

While balancing certain systems, you’ll be expected to follow the relevant protocols and specific procedures.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

You’ll be tasked to communicate with customers about their service demands and what they expect from you. As an HVAC Technician, you must be aware of written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to understand your customers’ needs.

  • Proficient in reading schematics and work plans.

Before installing any system or appliance, there is a certain map that you need to follow for installing the systems and appliances.

An HVAC Technician needs to be well-versed in reading those schematics before they move forward with the installation process.

  • Ability to work after hours, over weekends, and on public holidays with short or no notice

HVAC Technicians are mostly occupied in their job roles. This is because there are instances where urgent tasks to repair a system or replace an already installed appliance, you will also have to work over weekends. 

  • Ability to work in confined spaces.

The systems can be installed anywhere, and an HVAC Technician should be comfortable with closed and tiny spaces.

As someone in this role, you’ll have to be responsible for working in these confined spaces to fix, repair or replace specific systems.

HVAC Technician Skills

HVAC work is not easy, professional knowledge and training are required to solve issues.

Since problem-solving is a big part of the job, workers need to be able to communicate with each other and explain what needs to be fixed and why.
