Surgical Techs are crucial members of the surgical team. They are the professionals who assist the surgeons, nurses, and other surgical professionals before, during, and after a surgical procedure.

In this article, we’ll discuss about the surgical techs and their duties, then we’ll put out a step-by-step guide to help you understand how you can start this career.

Plus, we’ll also discuss about the best educational pathway, and what the industry veterans recommend, finally talking about the surgical tech program that makes you job-ready faster in just a few months.

Let’s get started –

What Is A Surgical Tech?

A Surgical Tech is a healthcare professional who assists surgeons, and other surgical professionals before, during, and after surgical operations. They play a crucial role in the operating room, ensuring that surgeries are conducted smoothly and safely.

They work alongside surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals and thus are a vital member of the surgical team.

They prepare the operating room, organize surgical instruments, and support the surgical team during procedures. Their primary goal is to maintain a sterile environment and provide the necessary tools and assistance to ensure the success of the surgery.

Their meticulous preparation, technical skills, and support during surgical procedures are essential to the overall success of the surgical team and the health and safety of patients.

Here are the Duties of a Surgical tech:

  • They prepare the operating room by ensuring surgical instruments are sterile, functional, and ready for use.
  • They assist in patient preparation by disinfecting and positioning patients for surgery.
  • They maintain a sterile field throughout the surgery to prevent infections.
  • They pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during the operation.
  • They handle surgical specimens by abelling and transporting them to the laboratory.
  • They count and track surgical instruments to ensure none are left inside the patient.
  • They assist with postoperative care by cleaning and restocking the operating room.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process of becoming a Surgical Tech.

Step 1 –> Get Your High School Diploma

The first step towards becoming a Surgical Tech is to earn your high school diploma or equivalent.

That’s a basic requirement, and if you don’t hold it yet, you should try to get it first.

Step 2 –> Enroll In A Surgical Tech Program

After high school, the next step is to enroll in a formal surgical tech education program. There are three primary options:

Certificate Programs

These programs typically take about 12 months to complete and focus on the essential skills and knowledge required for surgical technology.

Associate Degree Programs

These programs usually take 2 years to complete and offer a more comprehensive education, including general education courses and specialized surgical tech training.

Online Programs

Online programs finish faster within a few months, they are affordable, convenient, and flexible, allowing you to complete coursework at your own pace while still meeting the educational requirements.

Ideally, we recommend online programs. Why full-time programs are not recommended, we’ll talk about that later.

Step 3 –> Finish The Coursework

Complete the required coursework, which includes both theoretical and practical training. You will study subjects like anatomy, physiology, surgical procedures, sterilization techniques, and patient care.

Step 4 –> Acquire Clinical Experience Through An Externship

Surgical technology is a clinical job so acquiring some hands-on experience is very crucial. With your education program, you will typically participate in an externship at a local hospital or surgical center.

This practical training allows you to apply your skills in real-world scenarios, working under the supervision of experienced surgical techs and medical professionals.

Step 5 –> Getting Certified As A Surgical Tech

Certification, while not always mandatory, is highly recommended, and preferred by employers. Getting certified means you have demonstrated your competence and proved your skills. It enhances your job prospects.

There are 3 main certifications:

#1 Tech in Surgery – Certified (TS-C)

This certification is offered by the NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing). It also requires passing an exam and completing either an accredited program or gaining relevant work experience.

It is one of the most popular certifications among surgical techs.

#2 National Certified Surgical Technologist (NCST)

The American Allied Health (AAH) offers the National Certified Surgical Technologist (NCST) certification.

This certification is aimed at Surgical Technologists who seek to demonstrate their proficiency and commitment to the profession.

#3 Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)

This certification is offered by the NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) and it requires passing an exam after completing an accredited program.

Disclaimer: The CST certification is not mandatory. The other two are the most popular ones. To get CST certification you might need to go to a CAAHEP or ABHES recognized school and that would take 2 years to complete.

Step 6 –> Explore Career Opportunities

After completing your education and certification, it’s time to explore career opportunities. Surgical Techs can work in various settings, including hospitals, outpatient surgical centers, and specialized clinics. Networking with professionals, attending job fairs, and utilizing job search platforms can help you find suitable positions.

How Much Does It Cost to Become a Surgical Tech?

The cost of a Surgical Tech program varies based on the type of program you choose. As you know, there are 3 primary options to get your formal training. They are – Associate Degree, Certificate Program, and Online Surgical Tech Program.

Here’s the cost to become a surgical tech using each option:

Associate Degree

An Associate Degree in Surgical Technology is an undergraduate program offered by community colleges and technical schools, typically taking about two years to complete.

The cost can vary significantly depending on the institution, ranging from $10,000 to $40,000.

However, students should also consider the additional expenses associated with this already expensive tuition cost.

Additional expenses such as accommodation, transportation, and other associated costs, can significantly add up to the already expensive price tag.

Certificate Program

A certificate program in Surgical Technology is a short-term, specialized course designed to provide the essential knowledge and skills required to work as a Surgical Tech.

This program usually takes about 1 year to complete. The cost of a certificate program depends on the institution, typically ranging between $5,000 and $15,000.

However, these programs are often less flexible and follow strict schedules, and the quality of education could be less extensive.

Online Programs

Online programs in Surgical Technology offer the flexibility to study the principles and skills necessary for a career as a Surgical Tech.

These programs generally take about 6 to 8 months to complete. The cost of online programs typically ranges from $2,000 to $5,000, depending on the specific program chosen.

The flexibility, affordability, and accessibility provided by online programs are unmatched, making them a popular choice for many students.

It is crucial to ensure that the online program is accredited and meets clinical and state-specific licensing requirements.

Why Full-Time Programs are Not Recommended?

When choosing a Surgical Tech program, you should consider your career goals, budget, and personal circumstances.

Associate degrees offer comprehensive education but at a higher cost, while certificate programs provide a quicker route with moderate expenses.

Here’s why full-time programs are not recommended:

High Costs

Full-time Surgical Tech programs, especially those offered by traditional colleges and universities, can be significantly more expensive than online alternatives.

As you already know, the cost to enroll in an associate degree depending on the institution, ranges between $10,000 to $40,000.

To enroll in a certificate program at a community college typically ranges between $5,000 and $15,000.

This expensive tuition cost is unaffordable for many!

Added Expenses

In addition to the high tuition costs, full-time programs often come with added expenses such as books, supplies, lab fees, and other educational materials. These additional costs can further strain a student’s budget, making full-time programs even more financially daunting.

Student Loans

The tuition fees, accommodation, transportation, and other associated costs can quickly add up, placing a heavy financial burden on students.

Due to the high costs associated with full-time programs, many students are forced to take out substantial student loans. This can lead to significant debt upon graduation, which can be a major financial burden as students enter the workforce.

The pressure of repaying student loans can affect career choices and overall financial stability in the long run.

Lack of Flexibility

Full-time programs require a substantial time commitment, often demanding students’ presence on campus for extended periods each week.

This rigid schedule can make it difficult for students to balance their studies with other responsibilities, such as work or family commitments. The lack of flexibility can be a significant drawback for those who need to work part-time or full-time while pursuing their education.

So, these are the main reasons why full-time programs, besides being comprehensive and immersive, may not always be the best choice for aspiring Surgical Technologists.

On the other hand, online programs stand out for their flexibility and affordability, making them an excellent option for many aspiring Surgical Techs. All you need to ensure is – selecting a program that fits your needs and meets accreditation and state-specific requirements.

Why are Online Programs Recommended?

Online programs for aspiring Surgical Technologists offer numerous advantages that make them an attractive option for many students.

Here are the reasons why online programs are highly recommended by Industry Veterans:

Flexibility

One of the most significant benefits of online Surgical Tech programs is the flexibility they offer. Students can complete coursework at their own pace and on their own schedule, making it easier to balance their studies with work, family, and other commitments. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for those who need to continue working while pursuing their education.

Affordability

Online programs are often more affordable than traditional on-campus programs. Tuition fees tend to be lower, and students can save money on additional expenses such as transportation, accommodation, and campus-related fees. This cost-effectiveness makes online programs a financially viable option for many students.

Accessibility

Online programs can be accessed from anywhere, making them an excellent choice for students who live areas where traditional educational institutions might not be readily available. This accessibility ensures that more people have the opportunity to pursue a career as a Surgical Technologist without the need to relocate.

No Student Loans

Due to the lower overall cost of online programs, students may need to rely less on student loans, reducing their debt burden upon graduation. This financial advantage allows graduates to start their careers without the significant pressure of repaying large amounts of debt, leading to better financial stability.
