Your Sterile Processing Technician Questions, Answered

Thinking about becoming a sterile processing technician? This page breaks down what you need to know — from certification prep and exam requirements to in-person training qualifications.

Preppy’s 100% online, self-paced program can help you get certification-ready in 3–6 months — without quitting your job or going back to school full-time.

Certification & Program FAQs

Preppy is not a college or university, which means this program is not eligible for institutional accreditation. However, the program is designed to prepare students for nationally recognized sterile processing technician certification exams. Many employers prioritize certification and demonstrated skills over school accreditation.

The HSPA CRCST exam offers two eligibility pathways:

  • Option 1: Take and pass the exam first to earn a provisional certification. You’ll then have 6 months to complete 400 hours of hands-on experience in a sterile processing department to become fully certified.

  • Option 2: Complete the 400 hours of hands-on experience first, then take the exam to receive full certification right away.

Most students choose the first option so they can take the exam sooner and complete their hours while working in the field.

Externships & Experience

Preppy provides 40 hours of hands-on training as part of the program.

While we do not directly provide the full 400-hour externship, we offer job assistance to help you find employment in sterile processing. Once hired, you can complete the required 400 hours on the job to move from provisional to full certification.
